According to Indian newspaper The Hindu, the accident involved a recently repaired crane owned by Navayuga Engineering Company. The paper reports that the crane’s operator jumped out of his cab, after seeing sparks and smoke coming from the crane. As he did so, the paper says, he depressed a lever, causing the crane to lower its load, a four-tonne iron beam. The beam hit a passing car, injuring the four occupants and trapping one inside. The crane operator is still missing.
At a meeting Delhi Metro Rail Corporation director (electrical) Satish Kumar and director (works) Mangu Singh announced that, for the time being, lifting operations in public areas and close to roads will only take place between 10pm and 6am. Navayuga has been given ten days to ensure that all of its cranes are properly maintained.
