Materials handling specialist Demag Cranes & Components claims to have helped treble the storage capacity at steel distributor NSD’s stock holding facility in Scunthorpe, UK.
NSD’s growth necessitated an increase in storage capacity, and in January last year the company began to develop nine acres of land adjacent to the existing site.
Fundamental to the development of the increased storage area was the ability to lift and move steel to all parts of the site. To this end, Demag installed four 30m span portal cranes, each giving coverage of a 30m by 200m area of the stock holding yard. The 8 + 8 tonne capacity of the cranes was specified to ensure that trailers could be loaded and unloaded in one lift to speed up turnaround.
Inverter controls are incorporated within the integrated wire rope hoists. The radio remote control crane systems also feature an integrated cable wheel reeling drum to ensure safe control of power supply cables throughout the 200m length of travel.
Demag also installed a 30m span, 8 + 8 tonne semi-portal crane adjacent to NSD’s existing storage facility.
