Contractor Descon Engineering has erected a 450t diesel max reactor at the Pak Arab Refinery (Parco) near Multan in Pakistan. The reactor was 39m long and 4m in diameter.
Descon, which says it owns the largest construction equipment fleet in Pakistan, was responsible for all the erection and rigging jobs on site. For this lift, the heaviest one on the project, Decon used a 1,200t-capacity Gottwald AK 912 mobile crane in Maxilift configuration with a 65m boom and a 43m backmast. A 450t-capacity American Hoist 11320 crawler crane was used for tailing. A particular concern for the lift was the low ground bearing capacity, so specially designed steel grille pads were placed under the Gottwald’s outriggers. Other heavy lifts on the project for Descon included raising a 350t crude column and a 290t vacuum column. Client Marubeni Corporation of Japan has since given Descon a safety award for completing 13 million man-hours on the project without a single lost-time injury.
