Brambles Heavy Contracting in the UK enlisted the help of LGH Megalift to install a large paper drying cylinder at a paper plant in Leicester. The cylinder, manufactured in Austria by Voith Sultzer, measured more than 6m in diameter and 8m long, and weighed more than 100t. Lack of headroom prohibited the use of a crane. Instead LGH Megalift used a Lift Systems jacking system. The cylinder was placed on skids that tracked the cylinder 40m over rough ground until finally arriving at the support stillage waiting to receive the cylinder. Before reaching the stillage, the skid system had to span a 5m-long, 5m-deep service pit. To prevent deflection, another jacking system was placed in the pit and used to support the tracks. Once the cylinder was in position, the hydraulic gantry system was then used to lift it clear of the supports and into place.
