The new automated coal depot at the Staudinger power station in Grosskrotzenburg has been created in preparation for modernisation of the power plant. The existing depot uses an open coal tip that requires wheeled loaders to transport coal to the storage point, but is being replaced by an enclosed structure, which will reduce noise and dust pollution. Two circular coal depots are being constructed at the site, each 125m-wide and 58m-high, and will hold 220,000t of coal a piece.
The LTM 11200-9 was used to support the structure from a central position until it was complete and able to hold the weight of the roof structure, which was manufactured from eight sections, each weighing 40t. Once the structure was able to bear loads, the weight of the roof was distributed evenly onto the ring beam.
Six other mobile cranes also worked on the project, operating in teams of three to assemble and install the roof sections.
