The first 90t Grove RT 9100 rough terrain crane to be delivered in Europe has been installed by BEL Lift Truck (Scotland) on a long-term contract hire at the offshore facilities yard of Halliburton (Manufacturing & Engineering Services) in Aberdeen.

The RT 9100, the largest RT in Grove’s range, was bought by BEL for £400,000 (($650,000) for the five-year contract to replace a 12-year-old, 45t-capacity Coles cranes which BEL had previously hired out to the yard.

BEL specialises in the hire and sale of lifting equipment to the offshore industry. Managing director John Clarke explains his purchasing decision: “There is a continual flow of heavy items into and out of the Halliburton yard, so a reliable, manœuvrable machine is required. The two-axle Grove, which is widely used in the oil industry in the USA and the Middle East, is well known for this type of work, but this is the first to be used in Europe.” He adds: “Lifting and positioning of 45t loads is a regular requirement in the offshore yards. The RT 9100 can handle that at a radius of more than 6m, and with full 360o capability, so it can get close to even the most inaccessible corners. In addition, it can when necessary travel with a load, if the delivery truck cannot get close to the loading point.” The RT 9100 is 9m long and 3.76m wide. Its four-section, 11m main boom telescopes out to 34.7m. Optional telescopic swingaway or lattice jib extensions extend maximum tip height to 54.8m or 63.4m.
