Singapore’s refining and petrochemical industry is centred around what is now called Jurong island, created by connecting many smaller islands by reclaiming land.
Instead of ferries, access is now by a causeway. Exxon Chemicals Singapore has been expanding its operation here by building the Singapore Aromatics Complex.
Bechtel awarded Mammoet, already active in the area, the transport and lifting contract for a 290t reactor, a 90t purge bin, a 75t compressor skid and a 100m high flare stack.
First up was the 42m-long reactor, moved to site from a heavy lifting ship by a Mammoet barge and a self-propelled modular trailer system. A Demag CC 3800-SSL 600t capacity crawler carried out the lift with 60m of main boom and 200t superlift.
Next up was the 30m-long purge bin, this time with the boom of the CC 3800 increased to 84m and no superlift counterweight. A Series II Manitowoc M250 was used for tailing and later it was also used to install the flare stack in five sections. Main boom was at 76m and a 30.5m of jib was also fitted. A manbasket on Bechtel’s own Manitowoc M4100 allowed shackles to be removed on the purge bin job.
