Chevron is currently financing a US$1.5-billion upgrade of the GS Caltex refinery in Yeosu, now the fourth-largest in the world, to enable it to process heavy crude oil and thereby better withstand the cyclical nature of the refining business. Already vested with a refining capacity of 722,500 barrels per day, once the upgrades are completed this year, Chevron estimates the cost of processing crude oil at Yeosu will be reduced by US$1 per barrel.
