Tadano Faun has bucked the trend of decline in the German all terrain crane market and is having its best ever year.
It saw its market share double in the first six months of the year and it leapt from fourth to second place in the domestic market.
Liebherr remains the market leader for all terrain cranes in Germany, accounting for about 43% of new registrations in the first six months of 2002. Grove (Krupp) and Demag usually vie for second place and usually expect to get around 20% of the market. But with both companies being taken over, they have found sales success hard to find in their home market. Grove’s market share slipped to about 15% and Demag’s to about 12%. Faun, which usually expects to get about 12% or 13% of the market, took about 23% between January and June.
Moreover, with the market falling 25% in the first six months after a particularly slow start to the year, Faun is the only manufacturer to actually increase its number of new registrations in Germany, with 53 in the first six months – its best ever performance for the period for all terrains. Liebherr may be market leader but its first half sales have fallen more than 30% in the last two years in Germany to about 100 units. Grove’s sales have fallen more than 50% in Germany to about 35 units in the first half, while Demag’s numbers have collapsed from 86 for the first six months of 2000 to 29 this year.
