The first of Grove’s new GMK5130-1 all-terrain cranes to be delivered in the UK is now working for Midlands-based crane rental company Dewsbury & Proud. In all markets outside the US, including the UK, the crane is rated with a maximum capacity of 130t, while in the US it is rated at 165 USt and is known as the GMK5165.
One of the first jobs for the new GMK5130-1 was the installation of a pressurised gas container in the tight confines of a soft-drink plant near Kegworth. For this tandem lift, Dewsbury & Proud called in its other new Grove all-terrain, the 55t (60 USt) capacity GMK3055. The 15m (49ft) long, 3m (10ft) diameter gas container weighed 22t (24 USt) and was delivered direct from France on a special low-bed trailer. Working with 27m (89ft) of main boom, the GMK5130-1 handled the tank at a 12m (39ft) radius for the final positioning.
Grove claimed that the GMK5130-1’s counterweight was one of its biggest selling points with 13 combinations available from 1t (1.1 USt) to 40t (44 USt). The company added: “The six-section boom is also proving popular with end users with the GMK5130-1 capable of handling 10t (11 USt) at its 60m (197ft) boom tip. An 11m (36ft) to 18m (59ft) luffing swingaway jib is also offered, which can be extended to 32 m (105 ft) with the addition of inserts.
