Davies Crane Hire of Carmarthen has bought the first Hitachi Sumitomo SCX900-2 hydraulic crawler crane in the UK. The 90 tonne class machine was supplied by UK distributor NRC Plant.
The machine has a 60m main boom with a maximum combination of 48m main boom plus 28m fly.
The crane is currently on hire to Morrison Construction at Llanelli lifting rebar and concrete to build a 5,500 cu m under ground storm water tank.
Its main winches are fitted with multi-plate wet disks rather than conventional clutches, which is claimed to give a much greater capacity drum and improved smoothness of operation. It is fitted with 26mm diameter hoist ropes with a maximum line pull of 20 tonnes. The new negative brake system is designed to reduce operator fatigue and enhance safety.
According to NRC: ‘The machine has a newly designed air-conditioned cab with increased visibility and functional layout of controls, which includes joystick levers. This results in enhanced operating ease. For easy entry and exit to and from the cab it has been fitted with a new swing-link large sliding door.’
Safety features include a newly-designed load moment indicator with LCD graphic display panel, automatic slow down when machine is approaching overload, and strategically placed external emergency stop buttons for the operator/service engineer to stop machine during rigging and servicing if required.
