Wolverhampton, UK-based crane hire company ABA Crane Hire has implemented a new fleet management system on its Liebherr LTM 1110-5.1 and Demag AC 45 City cranes.
The system, called Spillard Live from UK mobile safety equipment supplier Spillard Safety Systems, is a cloud-based platform that captures and streams real time video and analytics simultaneously. It records information such as vehicle location, speed, impact force and driving style.
The video system fitted to the cranes comprises four live cameras and additional 180° cameras fitted down the nearside/offside and digital video recorder turn left and right alarms.
The system was fitted within a few weeks of being ordered and has been operational for just over four months.
“Driving these large vehicles is a skill in itself,” commented Adrian Baggott, operations manager at ABA Crane Hire. “We pride ourselves on our excellent health and safety record and started to explore a range of systems that would help reduce the possibility of accidents by increasing visibility to see all around the crane.”
According to Spillard, feedback from ABA’s drivers regarding the improved visibility of the system has been positive.
Real-time access to the data has also proved useful highlights Spillard. This was when damage to the floor of a project had thought to have been caused by ABA’s crane. Review of the video, however, showed that the damage had already happened, quickly relieving the firm of any liability.
“What we’ve got with Spillard Live goes way above our initial requirements and has made a massive difference when sorting out minor incidents on site and allowing us to see how effective our operators have been,” Baggott continued. “One benefit we didn’t expect was being able to use the cameras to get a project update if a client wants a real-time progress report. We’ve been so impressed that we’ve decided to commit to installing it on every new crane we purchase moving forward.”
