Crist visited the accident site, at the Paramount Bay development in Biscayne Bay, with City of Miami Mayor Manny Diaz. Speaking to reporters, Crist gave his endorsement to Rep. Greg Evers and Sen. Don Gaetz planned bill, which will require certificates for crane operators working in the state, and for tower cranes erected there. Gaetz and Evers’s bill received the approval of the state senate’s committee on business regulations on March 13. Last year, the bill received the approval of Florida’s house of representatives, but failed to pass through the state senate. The committee’s approval makes the bill’s passage through the senate more likely.
The state bill overlaps with an ordinance that was voted into law by Miami-Dade county legislators on Tuesday 18 March. The bill, put forward by Commissioner Audrey Edmonson requires certificates for crane operators, and inspections of tower cranes each time they are erected, or when hurricanes are expected.
