The Danish Odense Steel Shipyard Ltd. has started operating its new 1,000t capacity Goliath gantry crane, a replacement for the one blown down in storms two years ago. It has a span of 148m, a height of 114m, and a travelling speed of 40m/min. The crane can operate in winds of up to 80km/h, and is designed to withstand storm winds of up to 250km/h.

The equipment was supplied by MAN Takraf with assistance from various subcontractors including Vetter Fördertechnik which built the the service crane. The service crane sits on top of the Goliath crane and its function is to lift spare parts from the ground to a height of 121m. Reach is 22m, the safe working load is 16t at the jib end and the overall height is 20m.

To cope with high wind speeds the crane is equipped with four frequency-controlled slewing gears. Speed of lift is 10m/min and the column measures 2.2m in diameter.

‘The production of this crane was a challenge for Vetter because it was the largest slewing crane we have ever built,’ said Vetter managing director Klaus Vetter.
