Officials in Vietnam's capital Hanoi will implement new restrictions on cranes, after an accident on Friday 2 July 2010 that killed three workers.

Speaking to Vietnam News Agency, Hanoi municipal labour, invalids and social affairs department deputy director Do Thi Xuan Phuong said that new temporary rules would remain in place until permanent regulations had been decided. These would cover crane capacities, installation position and foundations needed.

Phuong explained that existing regulations were impossible to implement. She told Vietnam News Agency that the regulations "prohibit people from standing within a crane's effective radius, but the city's construction sites are often too narrow for this to happen."

The recent accident, on the 20-storey Vietnam Cable Television building, killed the operator and two other workers.
