Local photographer Robert Edmonds took photos of the Hulme Street site, shortly after the accident. The pictures appear to show that the crane had slipped over the edge of a restraining wall.
A statement from Hewden said, “This morning, March 24th 2009, a Hewden crane fell on its side whilst conducting a lift on Hulme Street, Manchester. The incident occurred during a contract lift to move piling equipment into a basement.
“No one was injured in the incident and no property damage has been reported.
“The machine, an 80 ton Demag crane and operator was on hire from the Hewden crane depot in Warrington.
“Hewden operates a nationwide fleet of 210 cranes and has an excellent safety record. The company reacted quickly to the incident and has informed the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), where a full investigation has begun.
“A full site clearup operation is also underway.”
