In Sweden, as in an increasing number of countries, it is no longer possible to get a traditional truck-mounted crane approved for elevating work platforms. For such use, truck-mounted cranes must comply with the requirements in EN 280, as was the case after 2002 with the requirements in EN 12999. In the Hiab cranes, a simple key switch on the control panel changes the cranes configuration between MEWP and crane standards.

MEWP approval covers approval of all installations on the truck. Det Norske Veritas has set out directives on how assembly is to be carried out. The first models available are HIAB XS 122, 144 and 166 HiPro/MEWP. “Now we’re busy delivering. In practice this means that they’re MEWP approved and ready for use as soon as they’re fitted onto the truck” says Lars Rydahl who oversees MEWP activities at Hiab. Several crane sizes that meet the new standard are already in the pipeline.
