The mentor system shows the operator the weight of the load on the fly jib, the angle of the fly jib, the length of the boom, the height of the boom end from the ground and the working radius.

Using the system, operators are able to see which loads can be lifted in all positions of the fly jib, permittable loads that can be lifted in each position of the fly jib, as well as all other data pertinent to the lifting operation, said Hidrokon. The data is also saved for later review, with information stored by hour, day, month and year.

This, Hidrokon said, provides a number of benefits. For knuckleboom operators, it increases safety as they know what loads can safely be lifted in which position. For owners, they can monitor how long the crane has been working to maximise utilisation. Manufacturers can also use the system to find out which situations their cranes are used in. And rental companies can track work conditions of their equipment to ensure they are not misused.

Hidrokon said the system has undergone two years of studies and testing, carried out on its HK 90 and HK 225 cranes, and will soon be available to the market.
