When Daniel Marr & Son of Boston, USA set up a lift to bring ashore a 16 ton section of the Titanic’s outer hull in October, superintendent John Alenkis selected Slingmax Twin-Path Extra fibre slings, made specially for the project by I&I Sling Inc. Synthetic fibre slings are often preferred to chain or wire rope when handling delicate loads.
The historic metal chunk, dubbed ‘the big piece”, was then transported to the Boston World Trade Centre to join a temporary exhibition of 250 other Titanic-related objects. To prevent the hull section deteriorating further it had to be kept wet, so it was sprayed with water while on show.
It has since been submerged in a glass aquarium for future displays, and will be on show in St Paul Minnesota until April. All rigging and transportation will continue to use Twin-Path Extra slings, says Slingmax.
