A worm slewing drive shaped like an hourglass, gives greater power, increased efficiency and smoother rotation, claims its manufacturer Kinematics Manufacturing Inc.

KMI believes that the hourglass worm slewing drive will “revolutionise” small crane rotation.

By giving the threaded section of the worm shaft the convexed profile of an egg-timer, five teeth engage with the slew gear instead of just one.

The increased contact area is key to improved performance, says the Canadian company, which adds that in a conventional gearbox this surface area is the weak link in the system because it fails before the raceway of the slew ring.

“With the Kinematics hourglass worm slew drive the gear set can turn a load that is at or above the full rated load of the slew ring raceway,” says KMI. Fives sizes of slew drives are available, from 6 inch (152mm) to 17 inch (432mm).
