The relationship between IHI and Terex began in 1952 when Koehring and Ishiakawajima Heavy Industries established Ishiakawajima Koehring Company as a technical/capital partnership. This partnership lasted until 1977. In 1987, Terex Corporation acquired Koehring. The relationship came full circle when Terex Cranes opened discussions and made the business decision to buy the crawler cranes from IHI.

Discussions regarding the purchase of crawler cranes began in 1998 leading to Terex Cranes purchase of their first unit from IHI in 1999. This was a prototype HC 80 Luffer for display at ConExpo 1999. Additional HC 80s were purchased in 1999. In 2000 the HC 110 was added to the product line. 2001 saw the introduction of the HC 50, HC 60 and HC 275 to the product line from IHI. In late 2003 the HC 165 was introduced to the North American market.

The 300th unit produced for Terex is an HC 110, which has been sold to RTL Equipment of Des Moines, Iowa.

Terex Cranes is now working with IHI on the development of a new model with a lifting capacity between the HC 165 and the HC 275.
