“Communications failures are a common root cause of lifting incidents,” the guide says.

“Maintaining continuous, conformed communications during lifting operations and keeping within appointed roles, responsibilities and communication protocols are vital factors in the avoidance of incidents,” it adds.

The guide, IMCA SEL 020/ M 193, starts with an extensive toolbox talk checklist, communications procedures, hand signals, equipment, alarms and displays, and types of lifting operation.

Printed copies cost £30 (EUR 37.50) for non-members (plus delivery).

The association recently published guidance on offshore lifting operations, and has also published a guide to bridge and dive communications.
