PSC Crane & Rigging has been run as a family business for more than 70 years. Jim Sever, great-grandson of the firm’s founder, Earl Sever I, and current VP controller of the firm, told Cranes Today about the company and its history.

“We work throughout the midwest, mainly in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. We have ten cranes in all. These range from a small 15 US ton Broderson industrial crane, through to a 120 US ton Grove TM 9120.

“We specialise in factory installations: 90% of our rigging work is in automotive and general manufacturing plants. In our crane work, we work with mechanical and electrical contractors, we also place bridge beams and box culverts, and do pile driving jobs. We’re generally renting the crane with an operator, but we do have a couple of 40 US ton rough terrains that are available for bare rentals.

“PSC Crane & Rigging is a family business, set up by Earl Sever I in 1933. My father, Earl ‘Lynn’ Sever III, is the current CEO, and his father, Earl Sever II, is still involved in the business as chairman; my mother is the company treasurer and brother is VP of operations. We have a lot of repeat customers, many who’ve been working with us for more than 20 years. These sort of long term business relationships are very hard to come by, and we work very hard, very diligently, to maintain them, as well as building new relationships with new customers. We’ve seen a lot of growth over the last five years.

“A key aspect of the way we run our business is that we know we are only as good as our employees. The average length of service of our staff is ten years. There’s an emphasis here on working as a team, and respecting each other’s need to get the job done safely and right the first time. We have some exceptionally good employees, which is vital as this is a people-driven industry. Our number one concern is safety and our record is impeccable.

“We just installed a 3,000 US ton Aida press for KTH Parts, a Japanese automotive parts manufacturer, at their plant in St. Paris, Ohio. We have a 500 US ton J&R Engineering gantry system which we used along with a 400 US ton rotator. The rotator is suspended on the gantry beams, and can spin the load 360° in either direction. It means you can place the load with incredible precision.”
