Mooney employs the cranes to move and load equipment weighing up to 800t on and off oil exploration vessels and fishing boats at its yard in Killybegs, County Donegal. Gloucestershire, UK-based industrial skills training provider C&G Services (Europe) Ltd has been contracted to provide the training.

Steve Thorne, a crane expert at C&G, has travelled to County Donegal to start the training, which included the know-how to be able to carry on operations even after a computer failure. He said C&G hopes to return soon to give further training.

“These men were already experienced crane users but they needed a refresher course to bring them up to speed with technical skills and legal training requirements,” Thorne said.

“For example, they have been reliant on their computers to manoeuvre the cranes, so I showed them how to use radius charts so that they can still control them if a computer goes down.”
