Partek subsidiary Kalmar Industries has been awarded a contract to supply straddle carriers to SA Port Operations, the terminal operating subsidiary of South Africa’s Transnet.
The straddle carriers will be supplied to SA Port Operations’ four main container terminals. The first order comprising several machines will be supplied to the Durban Container Terminal. Total contract value is approximately Euro 30m.
Kalmar will supply the 40t capacity three-high stacking models in partnership with its South African joint operation partner African National Engineering (Pty) Ltd (ANE). Kalmar and ANE will produce certain components for the straddle carriers in South Africa. The machines will be fitted with engines from Sisu Diesel, which is also part of the Partek Group.
Kalmar said that it won the contract on the basis of its compliant specification, its ability to deliver the machines quickly and the local arrangements made to comply with the SA Government and Transnet initiatives. The first straddle carriers will be delivered in December 2001 and the remaining units will be progressively delivered during 2002.
