KCI Konecranes of Finland has acquired the US company Burlington Engineering from Interstate Electric Corporation.

The deal was announced on 3 June 2002 Burlington Engineering is described by Konecranes as the market leader in the Boston, Massachusetts area with annual sales of $6.5m, about evenly split between industrial cranes and maintenance services. Burlington Engineering produces 50 to 60 cranes a year resulting in $2.5m to $3m in sales. Service sales in 2001 were $3.5m. The division has 35 employees KCI Konecranes said that it expects to put about $1m worth of its own components through Burlington each year.

KCI Konecranes’ industrial crane group in the USA, and its maintenance organisation Crane Pro Services, began their expansion into the northeastern US industrial market in 1998 with the acquisition of Overhead Crane Service, Inc. in Pennsylvania. In March 2002 it bought Shepard Niles in New York state. Konecranes said that the Burlington acquisition made it the market leader in the northeast, which is the third largest crane and service market in the USA.

Burlington Engineering will be managed as part of the Crane Pro Services organisation and becomes the 54th branch operation in the USA and the 68th in the Americas.
