Heavy materials for the extension of the power station in Irsching, Germany have been delivered to the inland freight port in Kehlheim and had to be handled for transshipment. For unloading the barges a Liebherr lattice boom crane type LG 1750 was erected in the port of the Danube.

For unloading and transshipment of the heavy loads to the building site the Austrian crane and heavy hauling company Felbermayr was commissioned. Because the company’s other big cranes were committed on other projects, it re-rented the LG 1750 from Grohmann, Berlin.

A large contingent of multiple axle trailers, tractors and personnel received the components for the power station. The generator, with its weight of 380 tonnes the heaviest load on the hook of the mammoth crane was placed on a Goldhofer trailer with 18 axle lines. For this lift the LG 1750 was equipped with a 35m main boom, 31.5m derrick mast, 170t of carbody counterweight and 175t of hanging counterweight at a 20m radius.

It took five days to transfer the heavy loads to the building site at a distance of nearly 60 km. It was a rare sight, when the combined vehicles negotiated the Weltenburg hill, which was the steepest part of the route. The length of the combination was more than 80 meters: five tractors, the heavy load trailer with its length of 27 meters and one pusher vehicle. Altogether a remarkable combined power of approximately 4,000 hp was applied.
