Dock duty: A 200t Liebherr HS 895 HD crawler crane is helping to build a new harbour in Palmi, in southern Calabria, Italy. The duty-cycle crane is placing rocks for a 400m long breakwater on one side at a 200m breakwater on the other. Contractor Franco Guiseppe di Roccella Ionica is carrying out the work from the quayside, since using barges would have meant work being interrupted by rough seas. A hydraulic grapple is used for lifting large stone blocks, placing blocks of up to 11 cubic metres at a working radius of up to 30m. The grapple is replaced with a dragline bucket attachment for excavating the harbour basin. Both the grab and the hoist winches have a 35t line pull.
