Hong Kong-based New Orient Development is progressing with the construction of a new residential development in Ho Chung, Sai Kung, utilising two Liebherr NC-B 12-70 tower cranes for material handling tasks.
The project, situated at Lot No. 2195 in D.D. 244, has been designed by P&T Architects. It is currently in the foundation, excavation, and lateral support works phase, which began in December 2024 and is expected to continue until the end of 2026.
These two cranes are in use to support the flow of construction materials across the compact site.
The Flat-Top NC-B 12-70 model lifts up to 12t and reaches a maximum jib radius of 70m, with a tip load of 2,000kg at that distance. It is part of Liebherr’s range designed for work in restricted environments.
It can operate at a freestanding hook height of up to 76.9m.
The flat-top design of the NC-B 12-70 omits the traditional A-frame at the tower head, resulting in a lower overall height and making it suitable for sites surrounded by existing buildings, hills, and watercourses.
For uncomplicated transport and assembly, the slewing unit and 70m jib fit into standard-sized containers, and the LiConnect system allows assembly of the jib in 5m sections.
After construction work is complete, both cranes will be dismantled using a single 100t mobile crane. This approach will help reduce dismantling time and limit the site’s logistical footprint, which is particularly important given its proximity to other residential properties.
The development’s first phase covers 7,102m² and will see the construction of 26 houses, each up to three storeys plus one basement level, with a total gross floor area of up to 5,262m².
According to the developer, the choice of compact, flexible cranes is intended to support efficient operation and minimise disruption to the established neighbourhood. This is in line with the project’s commitment to consistent noise control and keeping construction works moving as scheduled.
Recently, Hiap Heng Group, a Singapore-based company, expanded its fleet with the addition of the Liebherr MK 88-4.1E mobile construction crane.
