Terex says the Challenger 3160 features the only 50m telescopic boom available on a three-axle all-terrain.
Capable of lifting 35.6t at 4m, the crane is able to self de-rig to bring the vehicle’s total weight under 30t in compliance with some countries’ 10t per axle load limits.
For safe access to the hook block and variable assembly jib, the boom is capable of tilting at 5º under floor, thereby addressing the EN13000 standard.
Aimed at the one-man taxi crane market, the 3160 combines a tight turning radius on 3-axles with a European standard truck width of 2.55m for better roadability and to allow indoor use.
It also features the ergonomic Porsche-designed cab first shown by Terex at Bauma earlier this year.
Terex named the crane the Challenger 3160 to impart the cranes capabilities more simply, referring to its 3 axles and its 160 tonne-metre load moment.
The firm describes the crane as a product of a more user-focused approach for its design, practicality of use and rigging speed, as well as its nomenclature.
Terex senior manager, Rudiger Zollondz, comments: “All the speeds have been increased to save rigging time. The telescoping time, the time we need to set up the crane, it’s all faster with this class.
“It’s designed for its use, it’s not focused on being the highest capacity, although we currently have the best capacity in this class.”
The Challenger 3160 will be commercially available in 2012, and will be followed by several other all-terrain cranes under the Challenger moniker, all with lift capacities under 100t.
Terex’s re-branding campaign is a continuation of a three-year harmonisation programme across Terex’s portfolio, aimed at consolidating the strength of its brand.
