The US Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) has supported preparations for San Diego’s first-ever NASCAR race by loading a NASCAR vehicle onto the flight deck of the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) at Naval Base Coronado.

The lift was carried out by NAVFAC’s Crane and Rigging department using a 110t Link-Belt rough terrain crane.

The operation formed part of a collaboration between the US Navy and the motorsports sector, establishing a new partnership for the event at Naval Base Coronado.

NAVFAC stated that the safe and efficient loading of the car demonstrated the team’s skill and operational capabilities, which are regularly applied to critical lifts in support of fleet readiness.

The collaboration provides a distinctive setting for the upcoming race and helps to strengthen ties between the military and the local San Diego community.

Link-Belt Cranes, which supplied the crane used in the Coronado lift, is headquartered in Lexington, Kentucky.

The company designs and manufactures telescopic boom and lattice boom cranes for the construction industry.

Link-Belt has focused on continuous improvement over the past decade and aims to maintain strong product quality standards.

Previously, Link-Belt lattice crawler models were used in a $32.5m flood prevention project near Minneapolis.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation contracted S.M. Hentges & Sons, based in Jordan, Minnesota, to lead works, including the replacement of the Rush River Bridge and the construction of a new overflow bridge.

The project also involved partially reconstructing and raising Highway 93 by up to 12ft.

Three Link-Belt lattice crawler cranes, a 150t 238 HSL, a 110t 218|V, and a 110t 218 HSL, were deployed for the bridgework, managing the installation of nearly 9,000ft of piling as part of the construction’s foundational tasks.
