Heerema Marine Contractors of the Netherlands takes delivery this month of a 272t Manitowoc 2250 to be a ‘runabout service crane’ on board its massive Thialf crane barge.
The Thialf, which is 201.6m long and 88.4m wide, has a pair of 7,100t Amclyde cranes that give it a total lift capacity of 14,200t.
The 2250 will complement the big Amclydes and among its duties will be handling 25t anchors.
The new crane has been customised for the application, with an elevated cabin, marine protection that includes corrosion resistant paint, and a special back-up system that enables it to be powered from the ship’s electrical power supply for selected functions if the crane’s own diesel engine fails.
