Mantis has received 10 orders for the 45-tonner from customers and dealers such as Scott Powerline, Empire Cranes, Scott-Macon and Nesco Sales.
“It is our most successful new model launch,” says Mantis president Bill Mitchell.
The 45 US ton model came partly as a reaction to Link-Belt’s 45 US ton TCC-450 and the 47 US ton Terex-Bendini TCC 40, Mitchell says. He said he was surprised at how significant five tons of lifting capacity was for the market.
“We have a crane with 90ft of boom (the 40 US ton capacity 8012), and a 50-tonner with 110ft of boom (the 10010Mx). We have had a request for more boom – so we came out with a 45 tonner with 100 foot of boom.
“It was a no-brainer. There is not a lot that has been lost by giving it a whirl,” Mitchell said of the 45-tonner.
Mitchell also said that the telescopic crawler crane industry remains “very niche-orientated” and is not a volume business. Mantis crawlers are built to order. “Mine are made 10-20 at a time. If I was making cranes in serial production, it would be a different marketing and sales focus. I can’t imagine making 50 or 100.”
“The cold hard fact is this. You and I could build a car in a garage. It could be a really great car, but we would have to compete with huge manufacturers, their dealers, and computerised data mechanisms to manage and support the product line. We now have a successful network in the US. But you don’t have to step back very far, to Manitowoc, Terex, Liebherr and Sennebogen, to see organisations that are far superior in reach than we are.”
The crane is powered by a 215hp (163kW) Cummins diesel engine. Maximum hoisting speed is 488 ft/min (149m/min). Working weight is about 88,000 lbs (40t). Crawler tracks extend outward with hydraulics to a maximum width of 18ft (5.6m).
An optional 30ft lattice swingaway extension and 20ft offsettable fly jib raise maximum tip height to 159ft (48m).
