Maxim Crane Works, the USA’s largest crane rental company, unveiled a community service programme to mark the opening of a new corporate headquarters in Pittsburgh.

The ‘SafePlay’ Project is a corporate-wide initiative designed by Maxim to enhance playground safety.

Maxim CEO Jeff Fenton handed over a cheque for $10,000 to Pittsburgh mayor Tom Murphy as the City and the crane company jointly announced Mellon Park as the first SafePlay playground site that will be refurbished to meet safety standards.

“We want Pittsburgh to know that our commitment to our new home extends into our new neighbourhood,” said Fenton. “We are giving something back to the community by making a Pittsburgh playground safer for local children and families.” Fenton said that the company’s employees would also donate 1,000 hours of voluntary service for work at the site and he plans to solicit donations of skilled labour and supplies from across the lifting industry.

Mellon Park is a 13ha (32.6 acre) playground facility serving residents throughout the city of Pittsburgh including the communities of Shadyside, Point Breeze, Point Breeze North and Larimer. Last year, more than 125,000 city residents visited the park and recreation area.

An updated design for the location is being completed by Pittsburgh’s Department of Engineering & Construction and work on the park is set to begin later this year.

Maxim’s new Pittsburgh headquarters, located at 800 Waterfront Drive, Washington’s Landing, will house more than 40 of its 400 state-wide employees. The company operates 45 branches in five regions across the USA and employs 2,900 people.
