A new harbour in Mumbai, India that opens next year has placed an order for 29 of Kalmar’s E-One all-electric rubber tyred gantry cranes.
Gateway Terminals India Pvt Ltd will use them at a new terminal now under construction at the Port of Nhava Sheva. The first 12 RTGs will be delivered to the terminal in early 2006 with the remaining 17 due to arrive by the middle of the same year.
The E-One RTGs will be capable of serving seven rows of containers plus a vehicle lane and of lifting one container over a five-high stack. The safe working load under the spreader will be 50 tonnes. GTI has specified that all of these new E-One RTGs should be fitted with the Smartrail automatic steering and container position verification system.
Kalmar has also sold its first E-One in the USA, with the Port of New York and New Jersey’s Global Terminal & Container Services ordering ordered two, to add to its fleet of 10 Kalmar RTGs. These units, to be delivered in September, will also have the Smartrail system as well as RMI remote monitoring.
The E-One is the first all-electric RTG on the market. Claimed advantages include fewer critical mechanical components, and therefore a lower maintenance requirement, and fuel savings of 30%. Conventional RTGs’ hydraulics run constantly whereas in the E-One electrical power can be used only when needed.
Kalmar has also opened a training centre in Shekou, China for port operations staff. The company claims to be the market leader for reachstackers, terminal tractors and heavy container stackers in China. Recent orders include one for three RTGs from China National Technical Import & Export Corp, to be delivered to Shanghai Yangshan Deepwater Port in August, and an order for two RTGs from Yangzhou Yuanyang International Ports, for delivery in September.
Last year Kalmar established its second assembly plant in China, in Shanghai’s Lingang Industrial Park.
