Bucyrus-Erie was definitely ahead of its time. The 55-C and 65-C were the forebears of today's modern, hydraulic, lattice boom machines and were introduced at least 15 years before anything comparable came on the market (the Grove HL 150 comes to mind). We just bought a 1969 55-C off the internet, and it is an amazing crane. It can pick with 90 US ton hydraulics in many parts of the load chart, yet is roadable with full counterweight.
The H-5’s are incredibly neat little machines. Credit for these needs to go to Milwaukee Hydraulics Corp, which was acquired by Bucyrus in 1948 (see story: www.tinyurl.com/2ax9me). The Bucyrus-Erie machines were tough, simple, yet innovative, and were built to last.
