US-based Morrow Equipment will supply an additional Liebherr 1000 EC-H high-top tower crane to the Crazy Horse Memorial site in South Dakota, USA, increasing the project’s lifting capacity as major work on the monument continues.
The decision to add another crane follows the 2026 ConExpo event in Las Vegas, where project leaders selected the model to support ongoing work on the large-scale mountain sculpture.
The Liebherr 1000 EC-H, with a capacity of up to 50t and a maximum working radius of 80m, is expected to assist with the heavy lifting in the challenging conditions present on Thunderhead Mountain. Its modular tower configuration and stable slewing gear are, Liebherr says, designed to meet the demands of the evolving construction environment.
The Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation continues to carve a depiction of the Lakota leader Crazy Horse into the Black Hills, aiming to create a statue standing 172m high and 195m wide.
The monument, regarded as one of the world’s largest sculptural projects, relies on specialised equipment to manoeuvre granite blocks, tools, and prefabricated components across the site.
Morrow, which serves as the exclusive distributor of Liebherr-manufactured tower cranes, has supported the project for decades, with the first 1000 EC-H previously facilitating key construction stages.
The latest crane aims to ensure safe load handling for the upper segments of the monument.
A spokesperson for the site team said: “The Liebherr 1000 EC H provides the performance and dependability we need for such a unique environment. Its stability and precision are essential to our daily operations on the mountain.”
By expanding the crane fleet with another Liebherr 1000 EC-H, the construction team seeks to maintain steady progress as the project works towards further milestones.
