The new MTL 220-10 has been designed by MTI-LUX’s technical manager Thomas Reschke, formerly of Peiner and Jost. MTI-LUX general manager Reinhold Bräuner says, "The main feature of the MTL system is the small out of service radius for congested sites, which can’t be achieved by means other than a hydraulic luffing gear.

"It goes without saying that all motions are frequency controlled, step less and with low amps, and a CANbus system is built into the switch cabinet."

The crane has been specially designed to withstand wind loading. Bräuner says, "We have considered higher side winds than the regulations demand (160 km/h)."

The crane is also designed to for easy erection and dismantling, without the need to seperate the hydraulic ram from the jib. Bräuner says, "The design comprises relatively small weights and dimensions for easy handlíng of these MTL 220-10 components. The crane top can be loaded on just three lorries. This is probably the biggest hydraulic luffing crane for the construction industry."

The first of the cranes went to Tower Cranes UK, supplied it to parent company Ground Construction Ltd. Ian Britton, Tower Cranes UK’s tower crane manager, says, "The crane’s jibs have reinforced sections on all the joints, in line with the latest guidance on wind loading. It’s also the most competitively priced hydraulic luffer with single and two fall options, allowing for increased tower heights ."
