Scania has released a new 16 litre industrial engine that it claims provides lower fuel consumption and emissions. The DC16 is a V8 turbo-charged diesel engine with air-to-air cooling and will replace the long serving 14 litre model.

Scania says that the engine offers bigger displacement, without increasing the actual size of the engine. It is also fitted with electronically-controlled and mechanically-actuated unit injectors (EUIs) which can provide improved power control and driveline management.

The engine is controlled by Scania’s own management system, which uses communicator area network (CAN) to interface with other systems on the vehicle, such as transmissions and central processing units. Each cylinder has a separate cylinder head, rather than a large single head for each bank of cylinders. These heads are light enough to be removed by one person.
