A code of practice for the installation and use of truck loader cranes has been published in the UK by the Association of Lorry Loader Manufacturers & Importers.

The new code starts with definitions of terminology and moves on to cover the selection and installation of loader cranes, limiting and indicating devices, testing, operation, maintenance, and accessories and attachments.

On the subject of crane testing, the code takes account of the final draft of the European standard which was produced in January. This standard states that loader cranes should be tested not just to 25% overload but also to an additional 10% of the weight of the boom, given that a large loader crane may use as much as 87% of its strength on lifting its own weight when fully outstretched.

The code says that when testing a truck loader, it is acceptable for an outrigger or even a wheel to lift off the ground, but not wheel locked by a parking brake.

The code of practice is available from the secretary on tel/fax: +44 (0) 1905 770892, price £20.
