The Crane Institute of America has published a pocket-sized book, simply called ‘Rigging’. Written by the organisation’s president, James Headley, the 162 page book deals with wire rope, slings and hardware before progressing to a section about procedures which looks at methods of determining load weight, proper handling of loads and hand signals.
More than 250 illustrations are used to explain the points raised. The book is small enough to be carried around a jobsite and has been welcomed by the Association of Wire Rope Fabricators, whose CEO Donald Sayenga said: “This handbook very quickly ought to become an important asset for anyone working with rigging.” However, it is unlikely to be much use to anyone outside the USA as the measurements are mostly in imperial units rather than metric.
