The first Liebherr 102 K mobile tower crane to be sold in Australia is showing its flexibility on the foreshore of Sydney Harbour.

Distributor Morrow Cranes recently delivered the 102 K to building contractor Kell & Rigby at a medium rise site at Kirribilli where slewing space is limited.

Ease of transportation, erection and operation were important features in the selection of this crane which is designed to entirely new standards for 40tm to 110tm categories, according to the supplier.

Along with the ability to lift and slew a maximum 1,200kg on the hook from 50m of “straight stick,” the boom can be angled up from the horizontal 30O, and the jib section angled steeply to 45O to allow slewing a maximum 1,500kg load within tight spaces.

The slew gear and drives, with wind speed control, provide jerk-free movements, is is claimed.

The crane is erected on a platform at street level above a deep excavation and is hemmed in by buildings on three sides.

The two piece tower is set with a hook height of about 23m, though this can be extended to 29m. The basic unit was towed to the site, but in the maximum configuration the unit can be transported on one semi-trailer, complete and ready for assembly. The crane was assembled entirely in the air and can be extended when necessary. Even after telescoping and climbing, the jib can be unfolded above existing buildings.

The 102 K also has the ability to lift itself from road axles to rail track, having a lift height of 500mm and crane side movement of 375mm in either direction.

Ballasting is made easier, without additional erecting work, by a patented system within a working radius of 5m.
