Håkon Langeland, head of Ulstein Verft’s service department, said that the crane will increase the lifting capacity at the shipyard. It will be used both to perform heavy lifting at the shipyard and to offer the same service to external customers. It will be mounted on a barge for transport. It replaces two cranes currently used at the yard.
Managing director Karsten Sævik said that Terex had been able to offer a suitable crane at a competitive price, adding that the crane will be delivered in week 50 of 2009.
Langeland said (in a statement machine-translated from Norwegian), ‘We will be able to take on many more after market services. Here at home we will be able to offer more services by lifting, shifting and installation of equipment such as cranes, tower and A-frames. By moving the crane on the barge, we will be able to assist with a number of types of heavy lifting, both in the yard and other type of activity where a large crane capacity is needed. We will also be able to perform lift offshore.’
Sævik said that staff from Ulstein Verft will be sent to Terex for training, and Terex will be sending an engineer from Germany to help with installation and start-up of the crane.
