Liebherr-MCCtec Rostock, the maritime handling solutions division of equipment manufacturer Liebherr, and heavy lift transportation and project cargo specialist SAL Heavy Lift have conducted the flange laying ceremony for the new all-electric Liebherr LS 800 E heavy lift crane. The ceremony marked the go-ahead for the production of the first of a number of all-electric heavy lift ship cranes for SAL’s Orca fleet – a fleet that aims to contribute to the decarbonisation of the maritime industry.
The LS 800 E’s all-electric drive is designed to increase energy efficiency and minimise CO2 emissions. The crane is equipped with all its components housed within the crane column, ensuring optimal space utilisation and a sleek design.
Power-saving capabilities will be possible, says Liebherr, achieved through active communication between the crane, power electronics, and switch cabinets. By constantly optimising energy usage the system is designed to maximise efficiency while minimising power consumption. The crane will also have a vertical boom rest with a locking pin located inside the crane column to provide secure and stable positioning, enhancing safety and facilitating smooth operations, says Liebherr.
“We are delighted to collaborate with Liebherr on this very special project,” said Dr Martin Harren, CEO of SAL Heavy Lift and the Harren Group. “The LS 800 E crane represents the pinnacle of engineering excellence and sustainability, and we are confident that it will play a crucial role in our fleet.”
