Raleigh Hall of Fame honours the Johnson’s of Southern Industrial

Chairman and founder of Southern Industrial Constructors, Earl Johnson, Jr., and his wife Margery Scott “Margie” Johnson, were inducted in to the Raleigh Hall of Fame in late September.

The accolade came about due to the couple’s behind-the-scenes work for non-profit organisations in the community. Mayor Charles Meeker honoured the pair during a ceremony at the Raleigh Convention Centre.

In 1962, Earl Johnson, founded Southern Industrial Constructors and Southern Crane, today these firms employ almost 800 people. Johnson and his wife have been working with Raleigh’s leading organisations for years.

Earl has been a champion for youth in the community and has served as a board member and president for the Wake County Boys & girls Clubs, and on the boards of Ravenscroft School, Virginia Episcopal School, and on the board of visitors at the University of North Carolina.

He has been a board member, and past president, of the Oakwood Cemetery Board for 30 years, as vice chairman of the N.C Zoo, and a member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Centre board of visitors.

Margie Johnson has served on many committees and as president of many committees in Raleigh. She was a founding member of Haven House, and honorary chair of WakeUp for Children. She also served on school boards, at the United Way, St. Mary’s, and the Foundation of Hope. She has also been president of the N.C. Museum of History Associates, a cause she continues to support.

John Wilson, president of Southern Industrial Constructors, said: “Our entire organisation is very proud of the honour bestowed upon Earl and Margie. We’re fortunate to have such good people as founders of our organisation. Margie and Earl are an outstanding couple who love Raleigh, and who give so much of their time and energy toward making this a great city.”
