Two Sensonics SA-3 safety seismic switches are being used to monitor seismic behaviour in the vicinity of a giant crane at Rosyth Royal Dockyard in Scotland where nuclear submarines are refitted.
The sensors, fixed to the crane structure, provide continuous background monitoring of seismic activity levels in compliance with stringent safety measures, and activate an automatic shutdown of the loading system in the event of an earthquake.
Each switch uses three short period seismometers, enabling them to detect movement in all directions. When movement of a certain amplitude and frequency is detected, the crystals generate a voltage which activates a control system and cuts all power to the cranes, securing any suspended load.
