London’s Metropolitan Police has backed down on a plan that would have effectively made it impossible to move abnormal loads in the British capital.
The Met issued a statement ealier this month saying that due to budget restrictions and the redirection of resources towards street crime and countering the threat of terrorism, they would not be able to provide escorts for abnormal loads.
Prompt lobbying by the Freight Transport Association soon persuaded a re-think. Instead of an outright end to the service, police assistance to heavy or oversize loads will instead merely be reduced. Special load escorts will be restricted to certain hours of the day.
