Lifting is one of the most dangerous activities on offshore platforms, according to a new report on fatalities by UK offshore safety group Step Change In Safety. Risks involved in lifting are matched only by those of drilling operations and mechanical handling.
‘Among several findings, a key one is that of accepting “routine” as “safe,”‘ a spokesman said. ‘Of the 13 fatalities discussed in the report, five related to lifting operations with cranes – none of which related to any failure of the mechanical components.’
An article in Step Change’s Bulletin (available at www.stepchangeinsafety.net) argues that the conclusions are relevant for all types of lift, offshore or onshore. ‘We cannot be complacent, many of these incidents could have so easily happened on any installation.’
