Belgian-headquartered global crane and heavy haulage contractor Sarens has ordered the very first model of Liebherr’s new LR 12500-1.0 crawler crane.

The 2500 tonne capacity crawler crane will primarily be used it in the renewables industry han-dling items such as offshore wind turbines.

According to Liebherr the crane fills the gap between its 1350 tonne capacity LR 11350 and its 3000 tonne capacity LR 13000 and meets increased market demand for larger crawler cranes.

Liebherr identifies the petrochemical industry and port handling work, lifting large components for offshore wind turbines at ports in particular, as having become an important area of work for large crawler cranes and areas of work to which the LR 12500-1.0 is well-suited.

Saren’s managing director Carl Sarens said, “The high lifting capacity of the LR 12500-1.0 is the outstanding feature for us. The new crane will enable us to close the gap between our crawler and ringer cranes. We are particularly focussing on jobs in renewables for the new 2,500 tonne crane. Handling offshore wind turbines at ports is also becoming a much more important busi-ness segment and the weights of components continues to rise.”

In developing the transportability of the crane Liebherr said it has ensured that the new crawler can be used economically throughout the world. This, it stated, is an important criterion for global operators like Sarens.
