German heavy transport specialist Scheuerle is claiming to be the first manufacturer in the world to use disc brakes on heavy duty pendulum axle bogies. The prototype disc brake was developed in collaboration with Knott in Germany. The disc brakes will be available for Scheuerle’s range of Inter Combi, Euro Combi and Flat Combi platform trailers.
Disc brakes on any vehicle increase braking power, reduce squealing and rattling and reduce fading, Scheuerle says, and when used on a platform trailer, the discs provide precise distribution of braking effort, which can mean additional safety when the trailer is carrying a heavy payload. It is also claimed that disc brakes impair the steering of the trailer less than drum brakes and that axles with disc brakes still operate on very wet roads. Scheuerle also says that the disc brakes are far quicker to change than drum brakes, the difference in time can be up to 10 hours per axle line.
